Gait & Movement Training for Dunwoody Clients at Our Roswell Studio

Everything you do upright runs through your gait. Walking is the most repeated movement in your life — thousands of cycles a day — and the way you walk shapes your posture, your joint loading, and where pain shows up. Most training programs ignore it entirely. At Functional Patterns Atlanta, gait mechanics sit at the center of the system: we assess how you walk before we decide how you train. Our Roswell studio is a short drive from Dunwoody, and gait-led training is the most differentiated thing we offer.

Training takes place at 1241 Canton St, Suite 300, Roswell, GA 30075. We are by appointment only — no walk-ins, no open gym floor. Every client begins with a biomechanics, posture, and gait assessment, because training built on unobserved movement is guessing.

What a movement assessment actually observes

Our assessment isn't a treadmill video overlay or a shoe-store foot scan. It's a practitioner's observation of how you move: stride mechanics, arm swing and counter-rotation, ribcage and pelvis behavior, foot strike and push-off, and how your myofascial chains — particularly the anterior and posterior oblique slings — transfer force across your body with each step. Asymmetries and compensations that are invisible standing still become obvious in gait.

One clarification on scope: this is a training and movement assessment, not medical diagnostic gait testing. We don't diagnose pathologies or prescribe medical interventions. What the assessment gives us is a training map — which patterns to prioritize, which exercises earn their place in your program, and which conventional exercises don't.

Why gait comes first

Functional Patterns trains the foundational human functions — standing, walking, running, throwing — because they underpin everything else. If your gait leaks force or loads joints unevenly, isolated strength work just makes a dysfunctional pattern stronger. So we train the pattern: 1:1 private sessions, small corrective-based and circuit-based group classes capped at 8, and pin-pointed myofascial release, all selected around what your assessment showed. Rotational training, contralateral (opposite arm/leg) mechanics, and progressive gait work replace the barbell staples the system deliberately left behind.

Dunwoody clients come to us for the full range of what this addresses: chronic or recurring pain tied to how they move, posture that conventional cueing never changed, running or walking mechanics they want to improve, and strength training that respects their joints. We also work with scoliosis, postural issues, and clients pursuing muscle gain or weight loss on a foundation of sound mechanics.

The honest boundary: we train movement. We observe it, coach it, progress it, and build capacity over time. We don't promise pain elimination or guaranteed structural change, and training with us doesn't replace medical care.

FAQ

What is gait analysis, exactly?
In our context, it's a trained practitioner's systematic observation of your walking mechanics — stride, rotation, arm swing, foot mechanics, and how force transfers through your body — used to guide training decisions. It is not a medical diagnostic procedure.

I'm a runner. Can this help my running?
Running is one of the four foundational functions the system trains. Gait assessment reveals the compensations that show up at higher speeds and volumes, and training targets them directly. Many runners come to us for exactly this.

Do I need to be injured or in pain to get assessed?
No. The assessment is for anyone who wants their training built on how they actually move — pain, performance, posture, or prevention.

How is this different from a running store gait analysis?
Retail gait analysis typically exists to sell shoes — a short treadmill clip matched to a footwear category. Ours exists to program months of training: full-body mechanics, sling coordination, rotation, and reassessment as patterns change.

What happens after the assessment?
You get a clear read on what we'd train and why. From there: 1:1 sessions, small-group classes, or a blend — programmed around your assessment, progressed as your movement changes, reassessed over time.
